“No parent should have to navigate their child’s addiction without a guide, a community, and a reason to believe healing is possible.”
-Karie

From devastation to purpose

I know what it feels like to watch someone you love disappear into addiction — the fear, the grief, the desperate search for answers.

My journey as a parent, and now as a guide for other families, became the foundation for everything I do.

I created this space for parents who are carrying more than most people can see. Parents who are trying to stay hopeful while grieving what addiction has changed. Parents who want to keep loving their child, but also need to learn how to breathe again.

This site is your starting place for support, encouragement, and honest guidance.

Hi, I’m Karie Cavallaro.

I’m an author, advocate, and mother who has lived in the trenches of my child’s addiction.

Before my son Cadin was born, I lost his father, Cavin, in a plane crash — just three months into my pregnancy. Cadin never knew his dad. I never knew what it meant to co-parent.

What I did know was how to love fiercely, lean on family, and refuse to quit.

That stubbornness saved us both.

Cadin was bright, gifted, and athletic — a football player with real talent and real drive. He was also a boy carrying grief he had no language for, along with an ADHD diagnosis that made him uniquely vulnerable.

Around age 14, he started using marijuana. The years that followed became the hardest of my life.

I watched my son deteriorate slowly, then rapidly. When COVID stripped away the sports, structure, and friendships that had been quietly keeping him afloat, he entered full-on addiction.

For more than seven years, I did what parents like us do.

I hoped.
I fought.
I grieved.
I got back up.
I hoped again.

On October 23, 2024, Cadin got sober.

Today, he is in recovery and thriving. And in one of the greatest gifts of my life, he has chosen to walk alongside me in this work — lending his voice to parents who need to hear from the child they are fighting for, not just the mother doing the fighting.

The Heart Behind This Work

This is for the parent who refuses to stop loving their child.

Loving Through Addiction was created for parents walking through addiction with their child — whether they are in the middle of the chaos, standing on the other side, or somewhere in between.

You may feel scared, exhausted, angry, heartbroken, hopeful, or completely unsure of what to do next.

You are not alone here.

Through books, guides, affirmation resources, and upcoming courses, Karie offers support that feels honest, practical, and deeply human — not from someone who has only studied this from a distance, but from a mother who has lived it.
